image #2 - NOMADIC 2 on left is about one year old. its owner travels tons for her work as an international photographer. left side of this bag is darker. Olive oil spilled on it. deciding to do nothing about it, owner says the darkness is growing across the pocket. she's having fun watching it change and remembering where she was in life when these events happened. the bag on the right is my bag and the prototype for the saddlebag and the nomadic. it took its maiden voyage about 3.5 yrs ago on a trip to ny for market week. its experienced a couple of thunderstorms and a recent rainstorm which soaked it right through, has had food stains, oils from my hands, grime from urban travel, stains from new dark jeans, etc...all of these episodes contribute to the patina you see today. from an almost white state, veg tan leather eventually turns a rich caramel color.
IMPORTANT NOTES ON VEGGIE TAN LEATHER:
veggie tan is an unprotected leather. it will pick up evidence of your life. the color will eventually darken/patina to a caramel color. if you get caught in the rain, rain spots will show (and create a beautiful texture), if liquid is spilling on it that liquid will become part of the patina. if you are bothered at all by spots and other character building marks on your veggie tanned leather...this bag is not for you. adding protective coating (will darken the color).
